On 16 October 1963, Operation Greased Lightning set a world record flight time for flying from Tokyo, Japan to London United Kingdom in 8 hours, 35 minutes. Greased Lightning's speed record still stands. A B-58 Hustler, serial number 61-2059, named Greased Lightning, flew an average speed of 692.71 mph despite having to slow five times from its supersonic speed to re-fuel from areial tankers.
Major Sidney J. Kubesch, Major John Barrett and Captain Gerard crewed the Greased Lighting and were assigned to the 305th Bombardment Wing, 19th Air Division, at Bunker Hill Air Force Base, Indiana.
